Love – ‘Pure as the driven snow’

 




Tulips are said to represent enduring love and devotion.

I put the pot of tulips my husband gave me on Valentine’s Day on the bay window in our family room. Its backdrop? A backyard of freshly fallen snow.

Snow can symbolize “purity of heart.”

Enduring love and devotion comes from a pure heart? Yes.

  Sharing other people’s stories with readers helps me as a writer to learn, too. Nearly ten years ago, I wrote a story about a young adult who grew luscious tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers and more -- on straw bales. At the time, my husband and I had settled into our home that has over an acre of land, but no garden because of various concerns (bad soil, deer, trees). We tried straw bale gardening, and it was an explosive success. This year, my husband bought a couple of straw bales in which we’ll plant cherry tomatoes and peppers. Here’s to spring.

'If at first you don't succeed...'

  I tried for days to fulfill my hunt for a monarch butterfly to take a photo of in which to accompany an article I wrote for a magazine. Monarch butterflies are on the decline for various reasons, including diminished habitats, but I searched on. Alas, I didn't get a photo taken before my article deadline, but a few days later, while I was taking a walk near my home, I saw bees and butterflies buzzing around what I describe as a grassy area off the road. Monarchs!!! One obliged just long enough for me to get this picture.

  My indoor flower and plant garden obviously is oblivious to the time of year. Whether you compare your writing life to an “early spring bloomer” like my Easter lily or a colorful tradition like my Christmas poinsettia, keep writing – no matter the season.
