Here's the cliche'

Living in rural central Illinois, I can say that the outdoors is a great thing -- especially during a pandemic year.

I've typically gotten up for years before 4:30 a.m. to stretch out in my living room before heading outside to walk/run for at least one hour.

This year, I've seen more people having similar routines as I took to my jaunts around the state park I live near.

Here's the cliche': Fresh air clears the mind and lightens the heart for another day of writing. 💗💗

  Sharing other people’s stories with readers helps me as a writer to learn, too. Nearly ten years ago, I wrote a story about a young adult who grew luscious tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers and more -- on straw bales. At the time, my husband and I had settled into our home that has over an acre of land, but no garden because of various concerns (bad soil, deer, trees). We tried straw bale gardening, and it was an explosive success. This year, my husband bought a couple of straw bales in which we’ll plant cherry tomatoes and peppers. Here’s to spring.

'If at first you don't succeed...'

  I tried for days to fulfill my hunt for a monarch butterfly to take a photo of in which to accompany an article I wrote for a magazine. Monarch butterflies are on the decline for various reasons, including diminished habitats, but I searched on. Alas, I didn't get a photo taken before my article deadline, but a few days later, while I was taking a walk near my home, I saw bees and butterflies buzzing around what I describe as a grassy area off the road. Monarchs!!! One obliged just long enough for me to get this picture.

Then there's the beach

I've heard the suggestion all my writing life of how you should write every day. Well, sometimes, you just need a break. Among the best ways for me to have a break is to go to the beach. There's something about "beach water" that can help soothe tiredness.
