Dream office distraction

 


Dreaming along with people who tour their dream houses on the television channel that’s focused on real estate and home improvement, I can relate to the fact that many people what separate home offices for quiet times.

Many people work remotely. I work remotely.

My dream of a separate home office would include having a big picture window so that I can look out into nature.

I have a big bay window I can look out of from my home office that’s tucked into the corner of our family room.

From that window, I can see nature, like this Northern Cardinal pictured that seems to love our apple tree.

Big bay windows invite pleasant distractions from quiet times.

  Sharing other people’s stories with readers helps me as a writer to learn, too. Nearly ten years ago, I wrote a story about a young adult who grew luscious tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers and more -- on straw bales. At the time, my husband and I had settled into our home that has over an acre of land, but no garden because of various concerns (bad soil, deer, trees). We tried straw bale gardening, and it was an explosive success. This year, my husband bought a couple of straw bales in which we’ll plant cherry tomatoes and peppers. Here’s to spring.

'If at first you don't succeed...'

  I tried for days to fulfill my hunt for a monarch butterfly to take a photo of in which to accompany an article I wrote for a magazine. Monarch butterflies are on the decline for various reasons, including diminished habitats, but I searched on. Alas, I didn't get a photo taken before my article deadline, but a few days later, while I was taking a walk near my home, I saw bees and butterflies buzzing around what I describe as a grassy area off the road. Monarchs!!! One obliged just long enough for me to get this picture.

  My indoor flower and plant garden obviously is oblivious to the time of year. Whether you compare your writing life to an “early spring bloomer” like my Easter lily or a colorful tradition like my Christmas poinsettia, keep writing – no matter the season.
