A meeting of the roads

 

 


Two historic highways – Route 66 and the Lincoln Highway– meet in Plainfield, Illinois, a village 35 miles southwest of Chicago. 

The restoration of the 1940 Phillips 66 Service Station, where the two highways meet, will honor the two roads. 

In 2024, the Plainfield Historical Society acquired the service station to anchor a new, local history museum complex.

The museum will complement other historic sites in Plainfield, including its Downtown Historic District with some 50 properties on “both sides of Lockport Street between Division Street on the east and James and Main Streets on the west.”

  Tulips are said to represent enduring love and devotion. I put the pot of tulips my husband gave me on Valentine’s Day on the bay window in our family room. Its backdrop? A backyard of freshly fallen snow. Snow can symbolize “purity of heart.” Enduring love and devotion comes from a pure heart? Yes.

Straw bale-writing. learning

  Sharing other people’s stories with readers helps me as a writer to learn, too. Nearly ten years ago, I wrote a story about a young adult who grew luscious tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers and more -- on straw bales. At the time, my husband and I had settled into our home that has over an acre of land, but no garden because of various concerns (bad soil, deer, trees). We tried straw bale gardening, and it was an explosive success. This year, my husband bought a couple of straw bales in which we’ll plant cherry tomatoes and peppers. Here’s to spring.
