Winning it with chicken

 


In the late 1930s or early 1940s, a lunch counter in a gas station on Route 66 in Willowbrook, Illinois, began frying chicken.

The rest, as they say, is history.

The Chicken Basket, a historic roadhouse at 645 Joliet Road (Historic Route 66) in Willowbrook, has been famous for its fried chicken for decades.

Today, known as Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket, it has even more food, including Mac n Cheese Balls and Corn Fritters; Sauteed Chicken Liver Dinner; Blackened Chicken sandwich, Fried Jumbo Shrimp Basket.

And, of course, Famous Fried Chicken Basket.

A backyard of freshly fallen snow. Snow can symbolize “purity of heart.” Enduring love and devotion comes from a pure heart? Yes.

Straw bale-writing. learning

  Sharing other people’s stories with readers helps me as a writer to learn, too. Nearly ten years ago, I wrote a story about a young adult who grew luscious tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers and more -- on straw bales. At the time, my husband and I had settled into our home that has over an acre of land, but no garden because of various concerns (bad soil, deer, trees). We tried straw bale gardening, and it was an explosive success. This year, my husband bought a couple of straw bales in which we’ll plant cherry tomatoes and peppers. Here’s to spring.
