From saltpeter to show cave off Route 66

 


The Saltpeter Cave of the 1720s through 1933 in Stanton, Missouri, has turned into a tourist attraction instead of a cave for mining saltpeter to help manufacture gunpowder.

Now known as Meramec Caverns, the cave system is a few miles from the old alignment of Route 66 near Stanton and Sullivan, Missouri.

Meramec Caverns is open to tourists. Some of what they’ll find are:

 n  “Soda straw” formations hanging from ceilings

 n  Fake outlaws Jesse and Frank James

 n  A failed Foucault pendulum

 n  “Restored Lassie"

Straw bale-writing. learning

  Sharing other people’s stories with readers helps me as a writer to learn, too. Nearly ten years ago, I wrote a story about a young adult who grew luscious tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers and more -- on straw bales. At the time, my husband and I had settled into our home that has over an acre of land, but no garden because of various concerns (bad soil, deer, trees). We tried straw bale gardening, and it was an explosive success. This year, my husband bought a couple of straw bales in which we’ll plant cherry tomatoes and peppers. Here’s to spring.
