Toys, hobbies, BBQ on Route 66

 


A specialty toy store and hobby shop as well as a BBQ lounge are on Ogden Avenue, which is Berwyn, Illinois,’ section of Historic Route 66.

Berwyn’s Toys & Trains is at 7025 Ogden Ave., down the road from Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge at 6715 Ogden Ave.

Berwyn, Illinois, is 9 to 10 miles west of downtown Chicago.

Everything has a place in Route 66 history.

Berwyn’s Toys & Trains keeps Route 66 alive by retaining the “original authentic style” of the building it's in that was a Chevy dealership from 1950 until 1998.

Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge celebrates Route 66 with a rooftop “Muffler Man” giant and a sci-fi wall mural.

  Tulips are said to represent enduring love and devotion. I put the pot of tulips my husband gave me on Valentine’s Day on the bay window in our family room. Its backdrop? A backyard of freshly fallen snow. Snow can symbolize “purity of heart.” Enduring love and devotion comes from a pure heart? Yes.

Straw bale-writing. learning

  Sharing other people’s stories with readers helps me as a writer to learn, too. Nearly ten years ago, I wrote a story about a young adult who grew luscious tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers and more -- on straw bales. At the time, my husband and I had settled into our home that has over an acre of land, but no garden because of various concerns (bad soil, deer, trees). We tried straw bale gardening, and it was an explosive success. This year, my husband bought a couple of straw bales in which we’ll plant cherry tomatoes and peppers. Here’s to spring.
